First Arctic Expedition and Activities

The first Malaysian Polar research was conducted in Northern hemisphere started from 2008 until now. The scientist from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was pointing their observations at Husafell observatory owned by NIPR Japan. This project was realized through University Research Grant UKM. The first expedition has been done by Dr. Wayan Suparta and Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mardina Abdullah on 2 -14 September 2008 with works as follows:

  • Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between UKM and National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) Japan and between UKM and Science Institute University of Iceland (SIUI).
  • To install and setup the GPS system and broadband meteorological sensors at Husafell Station, Iceland.
  • To test, validate and collecting the GPS and meteorological data.
  • The research is aimed to quantify total electron content (TEC) and precipitable water vapor (PWV) toward understating the upper-lower atmospheric coupling and space weather prediction through excellent conjugate pair between Iceland, Arctic and Syowa in Antarctica.
